You’re Pregnant (with purpose)

A few days ago I was spending time in God’s presence and was absolutely wrecked. There is nothing like being in relationship with the king of kings. Being close to the creator of the universe. My heart was so full, and as I cried I involuntarily said out loud, ‘how can there be people who don’t have this? how can people not know? how can people reject you, Lord?’ In that moment it broke my heart and as it breaks the heart of our heavenly father (the Spirit of God can be overwhelming, in an amazing way).

Anyway, at the time I had been thinking a lot about purpose, all the things that fight for God’s place in our lives and the significance of a woman in this world. Then I stumbled across Luke 1:39-45(MSG):

‘Mary didn’t waste a minute. She got up and travelled to a town in Judah in the hill country, straight to Zachariah’s house and greeted Elizabeth. When Elizabeth heard Mary’s greeting, the baby in [Elizabeth’s] womb leaped. She was filled with the Holy Spirit and sang out exuberantly,
“You’re so blessed among women,
and the babe in your womb, also blessed!
And why am I so blessed that the mother of our Lord
visits me?
The moment the sound of your greeting entered my ears,
The babe in my womb skipped like a lamb
for sheer joy.
blessed woman, who believed what God said,
believed every word would come true!”’

In Luke1: 46-55 Mary replies:
‘I’m bursting with God-news;
I’m dancing the song of my Saviour God.
God took one good look at me, and look what
happened-
I’m the most fortunate woman on earth!
What God has done for me will never be forgotten,
the God whose very name is Holy, set apart from all others.’

The period before Jesus’ coming was filled with awe and joy and wonder. ‘God took one good look at me and look what happened’. Mary must have been in shock but she didn’t waste a minute. She believed the purpose God had for her, and she got up and moved in the direction He wanted her to.

Listen. Each of us are pregnant with God’s purpose. He is calling us just like he called the mother of our Lord. He is looking at you, just longing for you to look up and listen. That purpose is blessed, important, and will impact the lives of others. That purpose is one that will fill you with joy and fulfilment. Your God-assigned purpose is bigger than you could have ever imagined. And when God reveals it to you, you’re going to have to move by faith to the sound of His voice.

You know what came with Mary’s fulfilling her purpose though? Sacrifice and self-denial. Her entire life became about that purpose. In Matthew 16:24 Jesus said, ‘whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me’. Everywhere we turn something is fighting for our hearts and our attention, and each time we need to consciously choose God. I cannot describe the amount of life, joy and fulfilment that is waiting for you on the other end of that decision. But the result is true relationship with God and being in tune with his heart and will for our lives.

For me, self-denial meant leaving behind everything from relationships that don’t honour God, to pride and vanity and unforgiveness. It hurts when He pries such things from your grip but afterwards you feel whole, free, content and so much closer to Him. Its a continuous process of yielding and refinement. If you let God, he will break you apart and re-mould you in the image of Christ. And He will show you exactly what your purpose is and guide you in the right direction.

[‘And so, we are transfigured much like the messiah, our lives gradually becoming brighter and more beautiful as God enters our lives and we become more like Him’ –Paul (2 Corinthians 3:16-18 MSG)]

I just want to encourage you- seek God like you are drowning; as if you had only a few hours till you’re face to face with Him. You don’t want to feel shame at that moment, but joy. Be intentional with your relationship with him. Spend time in His presence, and studying His word. Look up verses about things that are on your heart. Talk to Him. Work on your spiritual growth. Dedicate your body and life to him.

With each step, you’d be better, closer to God, and closer to birthing the purpose He has just for you.

love and light,
